My film is in the form of slam poetry, with the words displayed in the screen with images to emphasis the
importance and significance of the words. The images aren’t the focus of the film, but are to elicit a
contemplative response from the audience, as one is contemplative when watching a sunset of a waterfall.
The first stanza refers to some of the words that start with ‘dis’ in a page of the Collin’s Dictionary, with
‘disability’ actually being the first ‘dis’ word on the page. The second stanza establishes how society
negatively/incorrectly views people living with a disability, with the third stanza discusses how people just
want to find out what’s ‘wrong’ with some and then try to ‘fix’ them. The forth is depicting a few different
types of disabilities, and how someone with a disability may struggle in trying to get people to understand
that their disability doesn’t define them or limit them completely, that they’re able to do things just as well, if
not better, than someone who is considered ‘able’. The fifth and sixth stanzas depict people how have
excelled how live/lived with a disability, and occupations where people living with a disability have been
incredibly successful. The seventh stanza begins to sum up the poem, listing plainly disabilities, but also
going to depict how it’s not the ‘dis’, that sort of prefix, that defines someone living with a disability, but the
‘ability’. That people living with a disability are able to do anything, they’re not limited by their disability,
and they certainly are not defined by it.
